Success Stories from Chougacha: MD. Mandar Box

Mohammad Mandar Box is a hard working farmer from the picturesque village of Fathepur in the district of Jessore. He is 63 years old; he has been farming for well over 50 years. He married his wife, Jorina, in 1966 and they have three daughters and one son. Md. Mandar has numerous grandchildren who are in school. His household expenses are about Tk. 4,000 per month, and he is able to save around Tk. 100,000 per year. His total earnings per year is about Tk. 148,000 per year. He owns about 15 bighas of land, much of which he inherited his father. For the last year and a half, he has been farming betel leaves.

Why did he use the services of e-Krishok?

It was a problem with his betel plantation that led him to use the agricultural services of e-Krishok. The betel leaf plants were becoming white and dying. If he did not do something about it, then he would have lost his entire crop. He heard from another farmer, Buddu, that he could get information and a solution from the local Community and Information Centre. Before, he would go to the local bazaar to seek information and help, at times he would go to the fertilizer store or to the store where he could get pesticides, but he was not happy with the results that he was getting; so this time he went to the CIC see if he could get a better solution from the CIC.
Md. Mandar Box was advised by the agricultural specialist of e-Krishok to use a medicine called Meladia. After using the medicine, his problem subsided and he is now looking forward to a very good betel leaf harvest. He is expecting to earn a profit from the sales of his betel leaves of about Tk. 150,000. This is a significant increase from last year’s profit of Tk. 80,000 from betel leaves. Md. Mandar is very happy and excited about this. Because of his old age, he is no longer interested in other business activities, though he does have one dear wish. He is very hopeful that if he continues to earn as he is earning by using the agricultural services of e-Krishok, he will be able to fulfill his life’s wish to go and perform Hajj.
