The Success Case of Farukul Islam from Morelganj, Bagherhat

Farukul Islam, a teacher, comes from the village of Patabaria in Morelganj Upazila. He has been teaching for the past 15 years at the Morelganj Primary School, where he is now the headmaster. Besides his teaching profession, Farukul has been farming in his backyard for the past 8 years. He says that being a farmer is very much like being a teacher—you have to look after the young plants just like young children, only then will you be able to reap the rich rewards.

Farming started out as a hobby for Farukul, but now he farms commercially. In his backyard farm, Farukul grows numerous vegetables, such as potato, cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal, bottle gourd and garlic. In addition to agriculture, he has also diversified into fisheries with his two ponds. From all of his agricultural and fisheries activities, Farukul earns more than Tk. 100,000 a year.
Farukul Islam learned about e-Krishok during the Fertilizer Recommendation Software (FRS) campaign. He learned that he would be able to get timely information and advice in the event of agricultural and other related problems that he may have by going to the local Community Information Center (CIC). He also heard of e-Krishok during courtyard meetings organized by the CIC; and so he was naturally curious about e-Krishok. He decided that when he next had a problem, he would use the e-Krishok agricultural service and see for himself if such a service was useful to someone like him.
He got an opportunity to use the e-Krishok agricultural service when his cauliflower crop was attacked by a rotting disease. The same problem caused Farukul to lose up to Tk. 20,000 last year. But this time around, because he to the CIC and used the e-Krishok service, he was able to prevent the level of damage that he suffered last year; and Farukul goes on to say that he estimates that he earn about Tk. 10,000 more this year because of the e-Krishok campaign.
