A day in the life of Abdul Jalil Mollah

Farmer Abdul Jalil Mollah and his wife relax in their kitchen and start calculating their household expenses. The couple was ecstatic when they learned that they managed to save more this month. Having just 4 bighas of land, the 55 year old farmer began his unique journey of farming years back in Rajapur Upazila of Barisal district with his wife and four children. Md Abdul Jalil is primarily a vegetable producer growing tomato, sweet gourd, muskmelon, chilli, string bean, bottle gourd and wax gourd.
Jalil was facing difficult times following cyclone SIDR, which left an immense trail of destruction in the Rajapur Upazila of Barisal district. Their homes, crops and livestock were all washed away by the unusually powerful storm.

After successful recovery of his crops, he had been noticing withering of tomato leaves which had a huge impact on the tomato yield. Tired of going to block supervisors whose suggested medicines were often not found locally, he decided to visit Grameen Phone Community Information Center. He came to know of this center from the Brand Promoter (BP) of the center. The entrepreneur emailed Jalil’s complain to an agriculture specialist (since the solution was not found in the website ruralinfobd.com) who suggested the medicine ‘admire’ for Jalil’s problem. Upon applying the medicine, Jalil saw that the result were brilliant. The crop proved a boon to their profits. The quality and yield of tomato was improving to a large extent. Solution from the center coupled with his hard work and commitment he earned an income of 40,000 tk.
‘Center theke shomadhan peye ami ottonto khushi abong onno Krishok bhai dero jete bolechi’ translated as ‘I am immensely happy to get the right solution from this center and I have also informed a lot of folk about it’, says Jalil. Currently, I am more confident, bold and determined. I have also imbibed the spirit of sharing. I am most grateful to the team in GP Community Information Center for transforming my life so positively and rapidly.
